A startling number of motorists illegally pass stopped school buses each day.According to a recent study, motorist illegally pass school buses more than 40,000 times daily, including on the passenger side of the bus.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation released the results of a one-day study conducted in January 2017 that documented the number of motorists that illegally passed stopped school buses.Of the 35 school districts that participated, 878 bus drivers reported being passed 727 times in one day.Of the 727 illegal bus passes, 88 passed on the passenger or right side of the stopped bus.

The Association estimates that the total number of illegal school bus passes in New York are approximately 41,401.Of the 41,401 illegal passes, it is estimated that approximately 5,011 occur on the right side of the bus where the children enter and exit the school bus.

On April 27, 2017 law enforcement officers around the state will participate in Operation Safe Stop Day. On “Safe Stop Day” police officers will ride in school buses and monitor buses in marked and unmarked patrol cars on certain bus routes with a history of complaints.

Motorists who illegally pass school buses will be ticketed, face fines up to $1000.00 and possible imprisonment.
